Spontaneity is the ingredient that allows a child’s curiosity and excitement to explode.
Education is not something which the teacher does. It is a natural process which develops spontaneously.
—Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
Our Montessori students taught us that the best-laid plans are easily put aside when:
- Someone brings a snake skin to circle in the morning
- There is a praying mantis on the patio
- We received a post card from a friend in England
- Someone’s mommy had a baby
- There is a chrysalis in the flower garden
As a Montessori teacher, these are the moments for which we cherish. Setting aside the day’s plans, we are able to live in the moment and learn that life is about the seemingly little things that make us ask questions and seek answers.
