Inclement Weather

August 10, 2015

Take a moment and think back to your fondest and most pleasurable childhood memories. The majority of our most vivid memories are those we experience in nature.

Growing up in Alaska I am well versed in inclement weather, and how to prepare for and experience it. My most prominent childhood memories were nearly all centered around the great outdoors.

On snow days when we couldn’t drive to school, I built snow forts.

In the summers we crawled into bed at 2 am because the sun never set.

We splashed in puddles and overflowing creeks.

We climbed up two miles to the top of the alpen-glow mountains for just a 15 minute sled ride down.

Nature imprints strong and vivid memories into our minds. On rainy days I see opportunity for memories to be made and connections in the brain to be wired. Yes, they will get wet. Yes, they will probably get dirty. But think of the positive memories they will be making in the process!
