We are often tempted to step in and “help” our young children with daily tasks. However, each time we do that we are sending a message that we don’t feel they are capable and thus are limiting our children’s desire to learn new skills.
We encourage perseverance and boost problem solving when we allow children to work through challenges. Consider the task of dressing, a skill that takes much practice to master. As parents and teachers we can facilitate this task by allowing ample time, providing clothing that can be manipulated more easily, teaching simple steps that can be repeated, and providing encouragement.
Giving opportunities for children to accomplish new skills at home and at school builds their confidence and development. We support the child in learning self-care routines; how to dress, undress, use the toilet, wash their hands, etc. Giving children a sense of independence and accomplishment will be carried with them on their life journeys.
